Preparation

Thanksgiving Preparation

Our family celebrates Thanksgiving because we are thankful for God’s grace and providence. His unfailing love and provisions. His peace and joy that he infuses into our lives. The enjoyment of this day is increased with Preparation.

Preparation takes time

We prepare months in advance for where and when we will meet. What will be cooked and who will bring the potato casserole. We go through the process of cleaning house, getting a turkey, thawing a turkey, and making all sorts of delicious food. All this preparation is important so the food will be ready at just the right time and everyone can focus on being thankful to God (and football).

Psalm 23:5 NASB

“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; My cup overflows.”

Here is the Strong’s definition for the word ‘prepare’ in the verse above from blueletterbible.org.

“עָרַךְ ʻârak, aw-rak’; a primitive root; to set in a row, i.e. arrange, put in order (in a very wide variety of applications):—put (set) (the battle, self) in array, compare, direct, equal, esteem, estimate, expert (in war), furnish, handle, join (battle), ordain, (lay, put, reckon up, set) (in) order, prepare, tax, value.”

As you can see the word ‘prepare’ applies in many ways to the process we all go through before Thanksgiving.

Application to Golf

In order to enjoy golf as the blessing that it is we need to prepare. When we prepare our golf game by planning ahead we play much better.

I’ve played in competition before and not prepared. I found myself on the 1st hole looking for a tee or even my glove. Then I am frantically looking for a divot tool or ball marker on the green because I forgot to put them in my pocket. The lack of preparation keeps me from focusing on golf and takes away from my performance and enjoyment.

Application to Life

The Life lesson here is the same. If you’ve read this far, this is obvious…

We prepare for life by spending time in God’s word like  Ezra (Ezra 7:10). and Seeking God (Matthew 6:33). More preparation this way will make “performing” and enjoyment in life much greater.

I hope we all will enjoy God’s blessings over this next year as we study and grown in His kingdom.

God Bless and Happy Thanksgiving!
