Andrew Plays the Palmer Course
One of the most picturesque golf courses in our state is the Palmer Course at Stonewall Resort. The drive through the resort to the golf course is majestic with mountain and lake views. It’s definitely one of my favorite places.
It also happens to be the latest course Andrew has played in the U.S. Kids golf tournament.
It Was a Beautiful Day
It truly was. The sun was shining, the sky was blue, and the bees were buzzing. So were the kids!
Thirty-five boys and girls, from ages 6 to 14, showed up on Saturday, October 1 to play golf. The older ones played 18 holes while the little ones played 9 holes.
Andrew was excited and nervous. He had practiced and worked on his swing all week. I know this because of how many videos he had me take of him making a golf swing. What mothers do for their sons!
Anyway, he was ready and played incredibly. He made long drives, sand shots, and even chipped one in! He was reaping the rewards of the hours he spent practicing. That day Andrew shot an 89 and the great thing was, he tied for 1st!!!
The director of the U.S. Kids Golf Charleston tour said they needed to do a playoff for 1st. The boys were excited but also tired. It was dusk when they headed out for a sudden-death playoff on the first hole.
Both Boys Teed Off
Andrew hit a big drive down the middle that left him with an 8 iron approach shot. His opponent hit it right and into a hazard. Andrew hit his next shot straight at the flag, but it was so dark we couldn’t see it land.
At the green, his opponent chipped up and almost made par. Then he tapped his putt in for a bogey. Andrew had a 40′ birdie putt, but because of the literal darkness he had difficulty judging the distance. After 3 putts, the boys had tied again.
They headed back to the clubhouse for a “scorecard” playoff because it was too dark to continue. The other player won with a lower “back 9” score. Congrats to him.
But as Andrew tells it, he tied for 1st!!!

I have finished the race,
I have kept the faith.”
