What is a Mashie Niblick?
Let’s learn what a Mashie Niblick is.
A Mashie Niblick is a 7-iron. Where did the name come from? Well to answer that question we must travel back in time to before the “modern” golfing era.
Before around 1920 clubs had names not numbers. Cool names like Brassie, Spoon, and Jigger.
Here is a list of some of the notable names:
- Brassie, 2 wood
- Spoon, 3 wood
- Cleek, 1 Iron
- Jigger, 4 Iron
- Mashie, 5 Iron
- Mashie Niblick, 7 Iron
- Niblick, 9 Iron
I think these are great names and would love to see a modern set with a name on it instead of a number!
“Hey Caddie, hand me my Jigger”
I think that would be a wonderful marketing idea, don’t you? (Hint to club manufacturers).
Let’s take a look at a real Mashie!
What’s In A Name?
In biblical times, and now to some extent, names meant something. For example: Jacob means “supplanter” or to “succeed” while Abraham means “father of many nations.”
Did you know what the name Jesus means? The name “Jesus” in Hebrew is “Yeshua” which literally means “God is salvation.” A few of my favorite names for God are Jehovah Jireh, Adoni, and El Shaddai which mean “God my provider,” “Lord or Father,” and “Lord Almighty” respectively.
The next time you pick up your 7 iron, think Mashie Niblick. The next time you think of God, think about His names.
Isaac blesses Jacob
Genesis 28:3 – “May El Shaddai bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples.”
